A decade of combat in Southwest Asia has placed new and expanded requirements on the military medical community. As is common with most wars, "signature" injuries emerge – in this case, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a significant increase in amputations.
BIOM Prosthetic Device
Neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) injuries are a leading problem for military Service members with 1.6 million injury-related medical encounters per year. NMS Injury Rehabilitation research focuses on finding solutions for improved treatment of orthopedic injuries, amputee care, burns and contractures, and spinal cord injury.

Neuroscientist Sheila Nirenberg was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2013. The Fellowship is a $625,000, no-strings-attached grant for individuals who have shown exceptional creativity in their work and the promise to do more.
